چکیده

When averaged across the three growing seasons of the study, regression analyses indicated that 25R47 had maximum yield at ~1,320,000 seeds/acre, close to the recommended rate of 1,400,000 seeds/acre (Table 1). In contrast, 25R62 had a maximum yield at ~ 1,030,000 seeds/acre, about 400,000 seeds/acre less than the current recommended rate (Table 1). Furthermore, this variety did not respond to seeding New York wheat producers harvest approximately 100,000 acres annually with average yields of 63 bushels/acre over the last 5 years. Although the crop has limited acreage compared with perennial forages, corn, or even soybeans in New York, the crop still averaged about $40M in value over the last 5 years. In addition, there is a strong demand for wheat straw, so the actual value of the crop exceeds $50M, making it a major New York agricultural commodity.

A Newsletter for New York Field Crops & Soils

Nitrogen is essential for the proper growth and development of all fi eld crops including corn. Without suffi cient N, both corn yields and silage quality can be impacted. Too much N can be a waste of money and leads to environmental losses. Producers and consultants asked if additional N was needed for corn following legume and/or grass sods in the rotation (fi rst year corn) and if the answer...

Cornell University evaluates 95-115 day corn silage hybrids at two locations in central/western NY and 75100 day corn silage hybrids at two locations in Northern New York. We arrange the hybrids in the fi eld into 5day relative maturity (RM) groups (i.e. 95-100, 101105 day hybrids, etc.) and harvest one or more RM groups at a particular site when the hybrids are in the 60-70% moisture range. Estimating yield gaps at the cropping system level☆

Yield gap analyses of individual crops have been used to estimate opportunities for increasing crop production at local to global scales, thus providing information crucial to food security. However, increases in crop production can also be achieved by improving cropping system yield through modification of spatial and temporal arrangement of individual crops. In this paper we define the croppi...

Diversifying Agriculture with Alternative Crops

Cropland diversity has diminished with the advent of mechanized agriculture. In some cases, a single crop is grown year after year in the same field. The lack of diversity in crops rotated in a field has allowed pests to build up, reduced yields, and in some cases increased soil erosion and reduced soil quality. Recognizing these problems, efforts are underway in many farming regions to add mor...
